Pre-Joining Assessments

Every candidate is assessed through the Marlines Training Portal — our pre-joining assessment platform, built on Maritime Trainer infrastructure and continuously updated by domain experts. Proctored under AI + Vision Analytics with photo verification.

Our pre-joining assessment suite is delivered on a rank-specific and vessel-type basis, with detailed reports shared with the client and archived in every candidate’s competence file.

Why pre-joining assessments matter

  • Human factors remain the leading cause of maritime incidents — even with the most advanced technology on board.
  • Multicultural crews carry additional communication and coordination risk when candidate selection is unstructured.
  • SIRE 2.0 (in force since September 2024) evaluates crew human factors directly — English proficiency, cognitive readiness and behavioural fit included.

Assessment types

Maritime English (SMCP)

Communication is one of the leading factors in on-board incidents. Rank-specific listening (narrated audio), speaking (voice-recognition), reading and terminology — authored against the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP). SIRE 2.0 human-factors expectations addressed directly.

Cognitive / Aptitude (CES)

Core cognitive skills — attention, reasoning, memory, learning — that underpin every operational task on board. Adverse incidents rarely start with a single failure of skill; they start with a lapse in cognitive attention. Our CES assessments measure the underlying capacities before they are needed in the wheelhouse or engine room.

Personality

A personality assessment mapping the characteristic patterns of behaviour a candidate is likely to bring to the crew group — including under pressure, in a multicultural environment, and across long rotations.

Marine Right Crew

A psychometric layer designed specifically for maritime HR selection — validating not only whether a candidate can do the job, but whether they will settle, retain and perform over a full contract cycle.

Competence Assessment

Rank- and vessel-type-specific knowledge evaluation of the candidate’s existing technical grounding — bridge, engine, catering, safety, deck operations.

Delivery

Assessments can be taken remotely under proctored conditions (AI + Vision Analytics + photo capture) or on-site as part of pre-joining screening. Each session is drawn from an extensively-tested question bank continuously updated by domain experts.

Reporting

Every candidate receives a detailed report with topic-level scoring — a gap analysis that doubles as a training-need document. Reports are shared with the client under NDA and archived in the seafarer’s competence file for future vetting or promotion review.

Customisation

Company-specific test configurations available on request: branded reports, fleet-type specialisation, additional verification measures (photo capture, ID confirmation) and custom cut-off thresholds by rank.
